About U.S. Time Zones

The United States uses nine standard time zones. From east to west, they are: Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, Alaska, Hawaii-Aleutian, Samoa, Chamorro, and Atlantic (for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands).

Most areas observe Daylight Saving Time (DST), advancing clocks by one hour during summer months. Notable exceptions include Hawaii, most of Arizona, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa.

Some states span multiple time zones due to their geographic size or location. These states include Alaska, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Texas.
